Seminar on Veterinary Border Control
Rationale of the Seminar
To answer the consumer demand, import of animals and products of animal origin is a necessity for a majority of countries. However, movements of live animals and their products, when not correctly managed, can induce important risk of introduction of pathogenic agents in a country. Appropriate scientifically based import regulations and efficient border controls are therefore of the utmost importance to protect the sanitary status of each country and to avoid the spread of animal diseases, including zoonoses. One of the major missions of the OIE, recognized by the WTO within the SPS agreement, is to develop standards and guidelines to ensure the sanitary safety of international trade in terrestrial or aquatic animals and their products, without imposing unjustified trade restrictions. For all countries, knowing these standards and making an appropriate use of them is therefore crutial to secure international trade .
Specific objectives
- to improve the efficiency of veterinary controls at borders, by promoting the strict implementation of OIE standards
- to share relevant information and experience
- to learn in particular from the EU policy and regulation in this domain
- to strengthen cooperation and communication between countries in the region.
