Seminar on Wildlife

Rationale of the Seminar

Wildlife diseases are a growing concern worldwide. Animals in the wild are both targets of and a reservoir for pathogens capable of infecting domestic animals and humans. Avian influenza, West Nile fever virus, classical swine fever, African swine fever, rabies, tuberculosis, Nipah virus or Ebola virus are few examples. Managing wildlife diseases is therefore necessary to maintain biological diversity, improve our knowledge of the health status of all animal populations and prevent species at risk from disappearing, while protecting human and domestic animal populations from the introduction of diseases. This relies mainly on the Veterinary Services (VS). The OIE has set up a permanent working group on wildlife diseases in 1993 which collects, analyses and disseminates information on almost 40 diseases affecting wildlife. OIE recommendations have been prepared and numerous scientific publications on the surveillance and control of the most important wildlife diseases have been overseen . Standards and guidelines targeting wildlife have been developed. Still, few countries have an appropriate knowledge of the situation in their wildlife population. This situation needs to be changed.

Specific objectives

  • to explain the importance of wildlife issues, and the need for VS to be actively involved in this domain;
  • to present the role and activities of OIE with regard to wildlife, the animal health information system -WAHIS- and the improvements on wildlife reporting, standards and support to VS;
  • to provide information on their role and responsibilities as national focal points in support to OIE Delegates to comply with OIE standards, in particular with regard to the monitoring of wildlife diseases and the provision of animal health information to the OIE on those diseases, as well as to better participate in the standard-setting process;
  • to allow for experience sharing in the region.
