Dr Roland Xolani Dlamini, Director of Veterinary and Livestock Services, Ministry of Agriculture of Swaziland, informed the OIE that a simulation exercise on highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is organized in the Manzini Region from 21 to 23 July 2010.

The purpose of this simulation exercise is to:

  • explore if the Integrated National Actions Plans (INAP) adequately address avian influenza,

  • assess the laboratory's capacity and capability to investigate and confirm HPAI outbreaks,

  • evaluate field services response to an HPAI outbreak,

  • assess health services readiness to investigate and respond to any human involvement in an HPAI outbreak,

  • assess avian and human influenza communication strategy,

  • identify and document gaps in the overall HPAI response preparedness with the aim of correcting inadequacies.
