Most of the recent emerging diseases are of animal origin, and nearly all are potential zoonoses. Over the last decades, nearly one new emerging disease has appeared each year; around 75% of them are zoonotic in nature. Recent West Nile fever and avian influenza epidemics, or the present rabies upsurge in Eastern Europe, bear witness to the vitality of emerging diseases the world over.
