Simulation exercise: Highly pathogenic avian influenza in Singapore

Dr Siang Thai Chew, Director General and Chief Veterinary Officer, Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) of Singapore, informed the OIE that his country is free from highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) and it will test its emergency preparedness to respond to a HPAI outbreak through a simulation exercise named “EX Gallus VII”. The simulation exercise comprises a table-top exercise which is taking place on 15 July 2013 and a field exercise on 17 July 2013 in Singapore.

“EX Gallus VII” will test the AVA contingency plans in dealing with HPAI detected in poultry at a border post and poultry slaughterhouse.

The specific objectives of the exercise “EX Gallus VII” are to test:

  • the AVA’s crisis management command;
  •  the responsiveness and adaptability of main and support plans;
  •  the culling of poultry in a poultry slaughterhouse;
  •  the cleaning and disinfection processes of  premises, personnel and vehicles;
  •  the waste disposal and incineration of carcasses by supporting agencies.

The field simulation exercise will be conducted at a local poultry slaughterhouse.
