Global Strategy

In following up to the recommendation from FAO/OIE Regional Meeting on Avian Influenza Control in Asia held February, 2005, the OIE and FAO in collaboration with WHO have developed through a stepwise and consultative process a global strategy that defines the road map and time frames for the short, medium and long term priorities including capacity building and strategic research. The strategy is an integral part of the FAO/OIE Global Framework for the Control of Transboundary Animal Diseases (GF-TADs)

The long term vision of the strategy is to minimize the global threat of HPAI in domestic poultry and humans through progressive control and eradication of HPAI in poultry. Achieving this goal will:

  • diminish the global threat of a human pandemic
  • stabilize poultry production globally;
  • enhance regional and international trade in poultry and poultry products;
  • improve human and food safety; and
  • improve the livelihoods of rural populations.

One Health (OH)

A better understanding of the causes of the emergence and spread of infectious diseases of animal origin has been recommended within the context of the “One Health” Strategy, developed by the four international technical agencies involved (FAO/OIE/WHO/UNICEF). The Strategy relates to the prevention and control of emerging infectious diseases at the animal/human interface: those with the potential to cause epidemics and pandemics, but also those animal diseases having an impact on food security and poverty, since that is also a public health problem.

Global Framework for the Control of Transboundary Animal Diseases (GF-TADs)

A joint OIE/FAO initiative which combines the strengths of both organizations to achieve concerted international action for effective prevention and progressive control of transboundary animal diseases (TADs). GF-TADs is a facilitating mechanism to empower regional alliances in the fight against TADs, to provide for capacity building and to assist in establishing programs for the specific control of TADs.
