THE OFFICE INTERNATIONAL DES EPIZOOTIES
AND THE GOVERNMENT OF THE KINGDOM OF THAILAND
SIGN AN AGREEMENT ON THE ESTABLISHMENT
OF A REGIONAL COORDINATION UNIT IN BANGKOK
FOR THE FIGHT AGAINST FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE IN SOUTH-EAST ASIA

On 30 November 1998, His Excellency, Mr Pongpol Adireksarn, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives of the Royal Thai Government, and Dr Jean Blancou, Director General of the Office International des Epizooties (OIE), signed an official agreement through an exchange of letters, regarding the establishment of a Regional Coordination Unit in Bangkok for the South-East Asia Foot and Mouth Disease Campaign, and the participation of Thailand in its functioning.

Dr Yoshiro Ozawa, OIE Representative for Asia and the Pacific, and Dr Suwithaya Pollarp, OIE Delegate of Thailand, also took part in the ceremony.

The main mission of the Unit, under the directorship of Dr Laurence J. Gleeson, is to coordinate a programme for the surveillance and control of foot and mouth disease in the seven countries of the region (Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam), in close collaboration with other national or international institutions, particularly the FAO, the IAEA and the European Commission.

The programme is supported by material and financial contributions from the Governments concerned, as well as from Australia, Japan, Switzerland and Thailand.

The final objective of the Campaign is to achieve, before the year 2010, the control and eradication of foot and mouth disease, a disease that currently reduces animal production in South-East Asia by 25 per cent.
