Announcement of 2016 OIE Photo Competition Winners

Today, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) has released the results of its Photo competition by announcing eight winners. Launched in March and dubbed “Animal welfare beyond the cliché”, the competition sought to provide entrants from all over the world, the opportunity to showcase their photographic abilities pertaining to the implementation of the OIE animal welfare standards.

Paris, 13 May 2016 – This year the competition was open to the OIE Global Network and veterinary students from all over the world, and with ten prizes up for grabs, the interest was bound to be high. All too often the work carried out by animal welfare players is downplayed and with the rise in denunciations of practices in animal production, several shocking images depicting poor welfare conditions are proliferated. The judges were therefore looking for photographs which best illustrate, both from an artistic and a descriptive point of view, the work carried out by animal welfare players, in particular by Veterinary services both in their public and private components, to promote and protect animal welfare worldwide in the context of the OIE welfare standards’ implementation.

The OIE received numerous applications from all regions of the world. After serious deliberation, under strict anonymous conditions, the jury, composed of Dr Monique Eloit, OIE Director General, Dr Frédéric Decante, veterinarian and press photographer and Dr Leopoldo Stuardo,   OIE Welfare Project Officer and photographer, evaluated the photographs which best demonstrated the understanding of OIE’s standards in the field of animal welfare and were aesthetically appealing and artistically captivating.  They unanimously selected the following winners:
