Decentralisation of the OIE Specialised Commissions

Rio de Janeiro, 25 November-5 December 2002

For the first time in the history of OIE, the meetings of the International Animal Health Code Commission and the Foot and Mouth Disease and Other Epizootics Commission have been decentralised.

Applying the new policy of modernisation and decentralisation of the activities of the OIE Central Bureau proposed in the Third Strategic Plan for the period 2000 to 2005, the OIE Director General, Dr Bernard Vallat, welcomed the request from the 'Panaftosa' OIE Collaborating Centre and the Government of Brazil, to hold the meetings of the International Animal Health Code Commission and the Foot and Mouth Disease and Other Epizootics Commission in Rio de Janeiro for 2 weeks from 25 November 2002.

For this event, a delegation from the OIE Central Bureau and the elected Members of the two Commissions will travel to Rio de Janeiro next week.

The OIE Director General will give an address during the opening ceremony, which will be held on the 25 November at the Intercontinental Hotel in Rio de Janeiro. Several important people will be present, in particular the Minister of Agriculture of Brazil and top representatives from Panaftosa and from neighbouring countries.

Dr Vallat will make use of his time in Brazil to strengthen profitable collaboration between the OIE Central Bureau and its Collaborating Centres, including Panaftosa.
