President of Mali inaugurates the OIE Regional Representation for Africa in Bamako

Bamako, Mali 18 April 2011 – His Excellency Mr. Amadou Toumani Touré President of Mali and the Director General of the OIE inaugurated the new building of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) Regional Representation for Africa, which the government of Mali fully funded for CFA 140 million, or approximately €213.450.

The OIE Regional Representation for Africa supports efforts made to improve the governance of national Veterinary Services of the 52 OIE Member Countries of the region.
Collaboration between Mali and the OIE had started in the year 2000 with the signature of a formal diplomatic agreement.

President Touré and Dr Bernard Vallat together cut the symbolic red ribbon before a crowd that consisted of several Members of the Government, high ranking officials of Mali, the Honourable Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Federation of the Livestock Farmers of Mali, and chief veterinary officers of 40 African, European and North American countries. Members of the diplomatic corps were also present at the event.

A commemorative plaque was attached to the two-storey building, which includes 8 offices, a filing room and two spacious meeting rooms. This event provides the OIE with optimal conditions to achieve its activities to the benefit of the African continent, giving the priority to the continuous skill improvement of national elites in charge of animal health and food safety issues in the framework of Veterinary Services.
