Inaugural address of the President of the OIE

The 80th General Session of the World Assembly of OIE Delegates will be held from 20 to 25 May 2012, bringing together representatives of 178 OIE Members and observers from international organisations that have signed an official agreement with the OIE, as well as other international and regional organisations and invited guests.

The General Session will be held at the “Maison de la Chimie(1) from Sunday 20 May 2012 to Thursday 24 May 2012 inclusive, and at the OIE Headquarters(2) on Friday 25 May 2012 (Friday’s session is exclusively for the Delegates; it concerns administrative and financial affairs and elections).

The World Assembly of OIE Delegates establishes the policies of the OIE and supervises their implementation. This year, its main work concerns:

the adoption of international standards regarding the safety of world trade in animals and animal products;

the fight against animal diseases and zoonoses and improving the quality of Veterinary Services;

the elections of the Council, the Regional and Specialised Commissions.

For those years when elections are held, only one Technical Item of general interest is presented by a Rapporteur chosen for his or her competence. This year the technical item is:

National and international experiences and roles in previous and future developments in the “One World, One Health” approach.

A complete summary of the world animal health situation will also be given.

All events relating to the 80th anniversary of the General Session will be held during the inaugural session.
