The neighbouring flock of broiler parent chickens (belonging to the same owner as the infected farm), where only serological evidence of infection was found, was tested on 9 August 2006 for a third time with negative results. The owner slaughtered the flock at the end of the same week. The remaining eggs have been delivered to an industrial processing plant. The competent authority is supervising the cleaning and disinfection of the farm and storage and further use of the chicken litter.
Based on the above-mentioned favourable results, the Netherlands lifted all measures on 24 August 2006 at 00.00 hours.

Identification of agent: avian paramyxovirus type 1 (APMV-1).
Date of first confirmation of the event: 4 July 2006.
Date of start of the event: 2 May 2006.
Following the actions undertaken within the framework of the epidemiological investigation into the outbreak of Newcastle disease reported in the municipality of Vale Real, State of Rio Grande do Sul, the following measures have been implemented in the protection and surveillance zones:
In accordance with the "National Active Surveillance Plan for avian influenza and Newcastle disease", after the completion of disinfection operations in the affected establishment, 50 14-day-old SPF (specific pathogen free) birds were placed in the establishment on 28 July 2006. Serum samples, swabs and organs were collected by the official Veterinary Services on 28 July, and 4, 11 and 18 August for serological and virological testing to evaluate the effectiveness of the disease eradication activities before any restocking of the premises. On 24 August 2006, the National Agricultural Laboratory in San Paulo (LANAGRO/SP) informed the animal health department that the results of the serological tests were negative. The virological tests are still in progress.
To date, the epidemiological investigation conducted in commercial poultry establishments and subsistence farms situated within the protection and surveillance zones has found no clinical signs of Newcastle disease.
The laboratory tests on 238 swabs from 79 properties situated in the protection and surveillance zones resulted in the isolation of a non-pathogenic Newcastle disease virus in one sample. The isolated virus was found to have an intracerebral pathogenicity index (ICPI) of 0.38. According to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), the virus is considered pathogenic if it has an ICPI of 0.7 or greater.
The animal health protection activities in the protection and surveillance zones will be maintained until the definitive results of the diagnostic tests are known.
Final report: no.
