As soon as the disease had been confirmed, two zones were established within a 10-km radius around the outbreak: a 3-km-radius protection zone and a 7-km-wide surveillance zone around the protection zone.

There are no large-scale poultry production farms within the 10-km-radius zone.

The sanitary measures provided for in the national contingency plan for avian influenza and Newcastle disease have been applied, including movement controls on animals and products at risk. Destruction of all the birds remaining in the affected farm and cleaning and disinfection operations are underway.

Date of first confirmation of the event: 21 February 2006.

Date of start of the event: 15 February 2006.

Since the last report, no new cases were confirmed positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza virus subtype H5N1 in wild birds. The national monitoring programme for avian influenza in wild birds is continuing throughout the territory of Croatia. Poultry have not been affected.

In order to prevent the appearance and spread of avian influenza, the following measures are in place:

- all poultry in the country must be housed, while ratites and feathered game must be kept in fenced areas in a way that prevents them from coming into contact with wild birds;

- stricter disinfection must be carried out on all vehicles used for the conveyance of live poultry, ratites, farmed and wild feathered game and other birds;

- hygienic conditions and biosecurity measures must be applied in all establishments in which poultry, ratites, farmed and wild feathered game and other birds are reared and kept;

- any change in the health status of birds and any contact with possibly infected animals must be reported to the competent veterinary authorities.

Final report: yes.
