OFFICIAL DISEASE STATUS > RINDERPEST

Rinderpest is a highly fatal viral disease of domestic cattle, buffaloes and yaks. It also affects sheep, goats and some breeds of pigs and a large variety of wildlife species. Rinderpest is one of the diseases for which the OIE established an official list of disease free countries. Following the declaration of Rinderpest global freedom by the OIE and FAO in 2011, all countries of the world with rinderpest-susceptible animal populations were recognised free of this disease. Member Countries are now exempted from annual reconfirmation for Rinderpest free status.

Following the declaration of the global eradication of rinderpest, all OIE Member Countries have adopted two Resolutions demonstrating their international commitment to destroying any remaining stores of rinderpest virus (RPV) or to safely secure RPV in a minimum number of approved high containment facilities under FAO and OIE's control.

Member Countries are still required to report annually on any remaining stores of RPV containing material (including vaccines) to the OIE.
