Future work priorities

In May 2010, the OIE World Assembly of Delegates adopted Resolution No. 19, recommending that the APFSWG's 2010 work programme guide the OIE's animal production food safety activities. This work programme includes the following specific topics:

  • Development of additional text on the management of antimicrobial resistance;
  • The safety of biotechnology derived vaccines with respect to animal products;
  • Revision of the Terrestrial Code chapter on Brucellosis;
  • Development of additional text  in the Terrestrial Code on Salmonella in poultry;
  • Consideration of animal production food safety in the field of veterinary education;
  • Consideration of the scientific evidence on the relationship between animal welfare and animal production food safety;
  • Food safety issues arising from the ongoing work on the emerging zoonoses at the human animal ecosystem interface (‘One Health’);
  • Electronic certification as a means to prevent fraud in international trade;
  • Consideration of priority pathogens for standard setting activities in animal production food safety.

The OIE continues to emphasize the need to strengthen the relationship with the CAC. In the capacity of an observer organisation, the OIE contributes to the work of several Codex Committees, including the Codex Committee on Food Import and Export Inspection and Certification Systems (which addresses inter alia the issues of traceability and certification), the Codex Committee on Milk and Milk Products, the Codex Committee on Fish and Fishery Products, the Codex Committee on Food Hygiene, the Codex Committee on General Principles  and the Codex Committee on Residues of Veterinary Drugs in Food.

In view of the relevance of the subject material, the OIE was actively involved in the ad hoc Codex Intergovernmental Task Force on Antimicrobial Resistance and the ad hoc Codex Intergovernmental Task Force on Food derived from Biotechnology. To avoid gaps and duplications between the standards of the OIE and Codex, the Working Group will continue to contribute to the collaboration between the OIE and the Codex Alimentarius Commission in the development of standards in the field of animal production food safety.
