International Conference on rabies - Kiev, Ukranie 15-18 June 2005

The recommendations of the International Conference on rabies which was organised in Kiev on 15 -18 June 2005 by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and the World Health Organization, with the support of the European Union (EU), the government of Ukraine and several stakeholders are available on line.

The most important aim of this Conference was to bring together veterinarians, scientists, wildlife experts, clinicians and public health officials to share their experience in modern rabies control, to agree on the strategies for the prevention and control of the disease in reservoir animal species, and to examine the threat posed by classical rabies virus and the emerging bat lyssa viruses.

The Conference emphasized the essential link between the eradication of the disease in animals through the correct implementation by Veterinary Services of the OIE standards, and the strong collaboration with WHO using its guidelines.

In consideration of the over 50,000 people dying each year worldwide after contracting rabies, it is essential to eliminate the disease at the source both in wild and domestic animals. Cooperation between veterinary and medical services should be developed. International support must be provided to countries for implementing the recommendations of the Conference, when national resources are not available.
