Paris, December 7 2011 – The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) welcomes the decision made to form a VICH Outreach Forum at the 26th VICH Steering Committee meeting (see notes to editors below) held in Tokyo from 14 to 17 November 2011.
As one of the founding members of VICH, OIE has always been a strong advocate for opening VICH membership to countries not members of VICH yet but which already have legislative systems in place with sound regulations for the management of veterinary products, the objective being among others to allow them to use, when possible, existing VICH Guidelines for national veterinary product registration.
In a side event supported by the OIE during the Tokyo Steering Committee, 11 non-VICH countries and 3 regional organisations (UEMOA, ASEAN and Camevet) discussed the possibilities and conditions of participation for their countries or regions in VICH activities and Guidelines.
“OIE actively supports all countries in building their capacity on technical requirements for the regulation of Veterinary Products. This new VICH Outreach Forum is an important step for our Member Countries towards the beneficial use of VICH Guidelines,” OIE Director General, Bernard Vallat said. OIE’s mandate includes promoting a prudent use of veterinary products and to enhance appropriate veterinary legislation in their registration, distribution and use at global level.
The newly formed Outreach Forum has as objective to promote international harmonization of veterinary products registration standards, improve information exchange and raise awareness of VICH activities and Guidelines with not yet VICH countries and regions.
Dr Sakai, chairman of the 26th Steering Committee meeting stated: “This major VICH initiative sends out a clear message that VICH has value to offer to the global community and the Outreach Forum now established will enable wider engagement in our activities.”
The inaugural Outreach Forum meeting is scheduled to take place at the 27th Steering Committee between 25 and 28 June 2012 in Brussels, Europe.
