Dr Monique Eloit, OIE Director General
Thanks to the kind offer of the government of Tunisia during the 86th General Session of the World Assembly of Delegates of the OIE, held in Paris in May 2018, we will have the pleasure to be in
from 25 February to 1 March 2019 to celebrate the 23rd Conference of the OIE Regional Commission for Africa.
The Conferences of the OIE Regional Commissions are OIE institutional meetings which purpose is to examine animal health, animal welfare and animal production food safety issues within the Region and to elaborate recommendations in accordance with the OIE General Rules. The recommendations to be adopted during the 23rd Conference will be presented to the World Assembly of Delegates of the OIE in May 2019 for endorsement. Once endorsed by the OIE World Assembly of Delegates, recommendations provide an important guideline for the fifty-four Members of the OIE Regional Commission for Africa as well as for the overall Organisation.
Regional Conferences facilitate closer contact and more active discussions among Delegates of the region. These four days entirely dedicated to the region are the best occasion for Delegates to discuss about regional issues and to express their concerns directly to the Director General and the technical staff from the OIE. It also allows exchanges with key representatives from international and regional organisations involved in animal and veterinary public health activities in the region.
Participation of OIE Members in the Conferences of the OIE Regional Commissions is very important allowing them to be part of the discussions on topics of regional interest and, therefore, to ensure that all regional contributions are taken into account and regional needs are well addressed by the OIE.
As Director General of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), I will be honoured to welcome and to accompany all participants during such an important event for the region.
Looking forward to seeing you all in Hammamet!
It is with great pride and enthusiasm that Tunisia is preparing to host the 23rd Conference of the OIE Regional Commission for Africa, an occasion for cordiality and friendship in the best traditions of the veterinary profession.
It will be a very great pleasure to wish you “marhaba”, or “welcome” to Tunisia, a country with three thousand years of history and a source of inspiration for authors such as Homer, Guy de Maupassant, Gustave Flaubert, Alexandre Dumas and Simone de Beauvoir.
Pointing in one direction towards Italy and in another direction sinking its roots deep into the Sahara, Tunisia is the perfect example of a link between Europe and Africa, between East and West.
I hope that, in addition to the fruitful and stimulating debates on the animal health situation in our continent and discussions on the foundations of the Seventh Strategic Plan which the OIE is due to initiate in 2020, you will keep a lasting memory of the many encounters, smiles and shared moments of friendship.
As befits this major event, the entire veterinary family awaits you with sincere enthusiasm and pleasure and will be on hand to ensure you have an agreeable and unforgettable stay.
