Epidemiological comments The USDA, Animal Plant Health Inspection Services (APHIS), and the Ohio Department of Agriculture conducted a comprehensive epidemiological investigation of this event. This was the first detection of rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus 2 in the United States. The rabbits, which were pets, were housed in horse stalls and ran free in those stalls. The rabbits had been on the premises for three years and had no history of travel. Surveillance samples were collected from wild cottontail rabbits in the area. All surveillance samples were negative. The premises was cleaned and disinfected. The source of infection is unknown. The Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus 2 event is considered closed.
