About FMD

Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral disease affecting mammals and has a great potential for causing severe economic loss. It affects cloven-hoofed animals.

FMD is the first disease on the OIE listed for which the OIE established an official list of free countries and zones.

The science-based standards, guidelines and recommendations issued by the OIE are designated as the international reference.

The OIE through its experts and world network of Reference Laboratories and Collaborating Centers provides policy advice, strategy design and technical assistance for the control and eradication of FMD.
