Avian influenza: First case confirmed in Indonesia

In a conference held in Jakarta on 25 January 2004, Dr Sofjan Sudarjat, Director General of Animal Husbandry of the Ministry of Agriculture of Indonesia informed that since November 2003, approximately 4.7 million chickens have died and 40 per cent of them were infected with avian influenza and Newcastle disease.

The OIE has requested Dr Sofjan Sudarjat to provide the OIE with more detailed information on avian diseases situation in his country.
