Each year in May, the General Session of the World Assembly of Delegates brings together representatives of the 178 Members of the Organisation, observers from international organisations having an official agreement with the OIE, as well as observers from other International and Regional Organisations and invited guests.

2011 is a crucial year since it marks the 250th anniversary of the veterinary profession in the world and also marks the eradication of rinderpest, a ‘first’ in the history of veterinary medicine equalled only by the eradication of smallpox in human medicine.

The 79th General Session of the OIE (22-27 May 2011) is an essential meeting for all animal health policy-makers worldwide and a historical event for the entire international community who will be celebrating the victory of the veterinary profession and its partners over one of the most dreaded animal diseases.

The solemn proclamation of the eradication of rinderpest, to be announced by senior officials of the OIE and FAO, and the prize-giving ceremony for the winner of the World Photo Competition organised by the OIE and the European Commission on the theme “Vets in your daily life” within the framework of World Veterinary Year 2011 and before the Heads of State and Ministers of Agriculture of more than ten countries, will be the highlights of the Session.
