17th Conference of the OIE Regional Commission for the Americas

The 17th Conference of the OIE Regional Commission for the Americas will take place in Panama, on the 16 -19 November 2004.

The OIE has a Regional Office in every continent. The five OIE Regional Commissions are composed by the representatives of the governments of OIE Member Countries in each of these regions. They meet every two years and the recommendations that are adopted during these meetings are submitted for final endorsement to the General Assembly of all OIE Member Countries in May of every year.

In addition to the Animal health status in Member Countries in 2004, to the report of the OIE Aquatic Animal Health Standards Commission and to an overview on the issue of new international standards, in particular on international control of avian influenza, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) and foot and mouth disease (FMD), the conference will focus on veterinary education and risk communication topics.
The statements of the Conference on new international standards and recommendations about the two technical items on veterinary education and on risk communication that will result from the discussions, will be of great interest to assist the Member Countries of the OIE Regional Commission for the Americas to adopt a common position, to be discussed with the countries of other continents during the OIE General Session of all Member Countries in May 2005, in Paris.
