83rd Annual World Assembly of the OIE

Paris, 19 May 2015 –
Nearly 900 participants representing the 180 Member Countries of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) as well as numerous public and private international, intergovernmental, regional and national organisations are expected to attend the 83rd General Session of the annual World Assembly of Delegates of the OIE at the end of May.

This annual event will provide an opportunity to review the current global landscape with regard to animal diseases, including those transmissible to humans, and analyse the new technology for collection and diffusion of health information.

The proceedings will also include the following:

  • adoption of intergovernmental standards on animal health and welfare, including  control methods for the main animal diseases,
  • elections for the Organisation’s governance positions.


Multiple exchanges of views are due to take place between Member Countries during the week’s proceedings, including on animal disease events during the past year, such as the current global epizootic of avian influenza and the rabies situation around the world, as well as on cross-cutting topics such as antimicrobial resistance, sanitary safety of food products of animal origin, strategies on biological threat reduction, as well as and animal welfare and implementation of the new Global Strategy for the Control and Eradication of peste des petits ruminants.

Also, the Delegates will be holding elections to fill all of the Organisation’s governance positions, namely the President of the World Assembly, the members of the OIE Council, the members of the Specialist Commissions and Working Groups, the bureaux of the Regional Commissions, as well as the Director General of the OIE.

During the proceedings of the General Session, members of the press are invited to attend the following sessions:

OPENING CEREMONY

Sunday 24 May from 3:00 p.m.
In the presence of representatives from more than 150 countries and 50 international and regional organisations, and alongside the President of the OIE, Dr Karin Schwabenbauer, and the Director General, Dr Bernard Vallat, numerous speeches will be made, including by some 15 Ministers and members of government of OIE Member Countries.
The Opening Ceremony will include interludes with musical and audiovisual entertainment  and will be followed by a cocktail reception from 7:00 p.m.

GLOBAL OVERVIEW OF THE OIE’S ACTIONS IN 2014 TO PROMOTE ANIMAL HEALTH AND WELFARE

Monday 25 May from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m.
Dr Bernard Vallat will present a report on the activities of the OIE in 2014 and the beginning of 2015. He will discuss the role of the OIE with regard to the latest sanitary crises and topical issues relating to animal health and welfare, as well as the activities carried out by OIE to benefit member Countries.

TECHNICAL SESSION OPEN TO THE PRESS

Monday 25 May from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
This session will deal with the use of new information technology in animal health management, disease reporting, surveillance and emergency response. The rapporteur will be Dr Tammy R. Beckham, an expert at one of the OIE’s Reference Centres in the United States of America.

PRESS CONFERENCE

Wednesday 27 May from 1:00 to 1:45 p.m.
Dr Bernard Vallat, Director General of the OIE, Dr Monique Eloit, Deputy Director General, and the President of the World Assembly of Delegates, Dr Karin Schwabenbauer, will be available at a press conference to discuss with journalists and answer their questions on subjects dealt with during the General Session and other topical issues.

REQUESTS FOR INTERVIEWS

Journalists will not have direct access to the other sessions.
However, interviews with participants may be arranged, subject to availability, throughout the General Session, by appointment only and with at least 24 hours’ notice.
