Signature of an FAO/OIE Agreement

An Agreement between the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) will be signed in Paris on the 24 May 2004 at OIE Headquarters (12, rue de Prony, 75017) by Ms L.O. Fresco, Assistant Director-General, Agriculture Department, FAO and Dr. B. Vallat, Director General, OIE.

This agreement renews the general conditions of the collaboration between the two Organizations in the field of animal health. It will facilitate and strengthen the synergies of the FAO and OIE whose missions and mandates are complementary.

The objectives of such cooperation are to improve the control of contagious diseases in order to support the development of the southern world and to alleviate poverty. Its objectives also aim at protecting the human health against diseases of animal origin and to prevent the risks of spread of new diseases in free countries.

A specific agreement related with the general Agreement, directed to the promotion of a Joint Initiative OIE-FAO called GF-TADs (Global Framework for the progressive control of Transboundary Animal Diseases) will be also signed on the same day.
