New infographic: the OIE’s Sixth Strategic Plan (2016–2020)
To protect animals and people from global health risks more effectively, to promote the exchange of information, and to strengthen national Veterinary Services: these are the priorities chosen by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) from now until 2020, within the framework of its Sixth Strategic Plan. For a clearer understanding of the components that will enable it to achieve these objectives, the OIE has published a new infographic.
Paris, 21 April 2016 – Adopted by the World Assembly of Delegates to the OIE in May 2015, the Sixth Strategic Plan of the OIE aims to promote excellence, transparency, communication and cooperation, as the foundations of modern animal health governance. Building upon the achievements of previous strategic plans, it ensures that the OIE will continue to respond effectively to the major challenges confronting society and, as these challenges evolve, to adapt accordingly. The Organisation reaffirms its commitment to protecting the health and welfare of animals worldwide, thus supporting economic prosperity as well as the social and environmental well-being of human populations.
To this end, the OIE continues to develop international standards and recommendations for its 180 Member Countries, drawing upon the latest scientific advances in collaboration with its network of expertise of more than 300 Reference Centres and many partners.
« Protecting animals, preserving our future »
The activities of the OIE will centre on three strategic objectives:
- improve the health and welfare of animals, and the safety of animal products and foods of animal origin, and reduce the spread of animal diseases. The implementation of the ‘One Health’ approach will be crucial in overcoming the risks found at the interface between humans, animals and the environment;
- establish trust between participants and commercial partners in the cross-border trade of animals and their products, through transparency and good communication regarding epidemiologically important diseases and, above all, through the OIE standards on animal health safety during trade;
- strengthen the capacities of Veterinary Services and the resilience of their activities while reinforcing support for Member Countries.
Today, more than ever, OIE missions are decided by their contribution to the social and economic development of our communities, while protecting the health of all living beings and the environment we share.
« In implementing the Sixth Strategic Plan, we continue the OIE’s commitment to improving the quality of our Veterinary Services, since these are the cornerstone of effective global health and essential if we are to meet the future challenges of our planet,” explains Dr Monique Eloit, Director General of the OIE.
