Multi-country Simulation exercise: Foot and mouth disease in Turkey

18 to 19 June

Dr Nihat Pakdil, Deputy Undersecretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Turkey, informed the OIE that a multi-country simulation exercise on foot and mouth disease (FMD) will take place in the Edirne Province in Thrace from 18 to 19 June 2019.Representatives from Bulgaria and Greece will also participate. The exercise is supported and coordinated by the European Commission for the Control of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (EuFMD).

The overall aim of the exercise is to test the response skills of the veterinary services, specially the local veterinary officers. The exercise will include drills and a table-top. The scenario will include a suspect and confirmed outbreak of FMD in a farm close to the border with Bulgaria and Greece.

The specific objectives are to:

  • Assess the ability of local staff to carry out an FMD investigation, and to plan the depopulation and cleaning and disinfection of the premises
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the coordination arrangements set out in the contingency plan, and identify areas for improvement
  •  Increase awareness of FMD and the control measures required amongst non-veterinary stakeholders
