Simulation exercise: African swine fever in Nicaragua-2

25 to 29 April 2022

Dr Wilmer Juarez, Director of Animal Health and Delegate to the OIE, informed the OIE that the Institute of Agricultural Protection and Health of Nicaragua would conduct a national simulation exercise on African swine fever, from 25 to 29 April 2022, in the city of Managua. This simulation exercise is part of the continuous training process of the national Veterinary Services.

The specific objectives are:

  • Test the capacity of public institutions, official and private veterinary services to respond to the potential incursion of African swine fever into the country.
  • Strengthen biosecurity and epidemiological surveillance measures related to the prevention of African swine fever.
  • Strengthen technical capacities and form national rapid response teams.
  • Validate the general emergency response manual.

Ninety professionals will participate in this simulation exercise, among them: administrative staff of the Institute of Agricultural Protection and Health; Veterinarians of the official Veterinary Service, Quarantine, Traceability, Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory; Institutions of the National System of Production, Consumption and Commerce (SNPCC); Ministry of Health; National System for Disaster Prevention, Mitigation and Response (SINAPRED); Nicaraguan Army; National Police; Nicaraguan Chamber of Pig Farmers (CANIPOR); Organization for Plant Protection and Animal Health (OIRSA); Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO); Inter-American Institute for Cooperation and Agriculture (IICA); OIE; private enterprises and producers.
