Simulation exercise: Anthrax in Australia-2

13 to 15 September and 27 to 29 September

Dr Mark Schipp, Chief Veterinary Officer, Department of Agriculture and Water Resources, Canberra, Australia, has informed the OIE that two bovine necropsy and diseased carcass disposal simulation exercises will be conducted by the Victorian Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources. Both simulation exercises will take place in Tatura, Victoria from 13 to 15 September and in Maffra, Victoria, from 27 to 29 September 2016.

These simulation exercises will provide training in appropriate capture, restraint and euthanasia of cattle, cattle necropsy skills and disposal of diseased livestock. Staff from across Victoria will be involved.

The overall aim of the simulation exercises are to:

  •  improve the capability of Victorian government veterinarians to safely capture, restrain, euthanase and necropsy cattle;
  • test and improve the capability of staff to dispose of diseased livestock effectively in real-time; and
  • test the internal communication processes in the event of an emergency animal disease.
