Simulation exercise: Avian influenza in El Salvador-2

Dr José David Bolaños Méndez, Chief of Animal Health Division, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, El Salvador, informed the OIE that from 8 to 12 December 2008 a workshop named “Preparing for a pandemic of avian influenza, El Salvador” is taking place in his country.

The aim of this workshop is to strengthen the capacity of detection, prevention and control of avian influenza in El Salvador, with special reference to the interface birds-humans. It includes two days of preparation of the simulation exercise involving Authorities of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance, the Armed Forces and other institutions, one day of theoretical exercise, one day of field exercise and one day of evaluation.

This activity is carried out under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, the Pan American Health Organization, the USAID/STOP AI, CDC and the National Commission for Prevention and Control of Avian Influenza Pandemic.
