Simulation exercise: Avian influenza in Turkey 2

16 to 19 October 2007

Professor Muzaffer Aydemir, Director General, General Directorate of Protection and Control, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MARA) of Turkey informed the OIE that an avian influenza simulation exercise is organized by the MARA and Ministry of Health in coordination with the Technical Assistance to Avian Influenza Preparedness and Response Project of the European Commission and is taken place in Samsun from 16 to 19 October 2007.

The objectives of this exercise are to:

– test the Avian Influenza Contingency Plan and train staff on its implementation,
– test operational response arrangements,
– examine the liaison and interdependencies between the key operational partners, and
– consider the impact of the disease as a zoonotic infection.

The exercise scenario includes spread from several primary outbreaks to 5 Samsun districts. Local Disease Crisis Centre is established in Samsun province, and establish operational units at district level in the infected areas.

National Disease Crisis Centre representatives and key industry stakeholders take part to this exercise.

The field exercise is preceded by two days of table-top simulation exercise.
