Simulation exercise: Avian influenza in Uruguay

Dr Carlos A. Correa Messuti, Ministry of Animal Production, Agriculture and Fisheries of Uruguay informed the OIE that his country realize from 11 to 14 December 2006, in Cerrillos Canelones Department, a simulation exercise to evaluate the management capability of livestock services in responding to a hypothetical outbreak of avian influenza in poultry farms.

The main objective of this exercise is to test the organisation and rapid response capability of the intervention system in facing an eventual introduction of avian influenza in a locality in the country and the interdisciplinary and multi-agency coordination procedures.

Officials from the Uruguayan livestock services, Public Health Ministry, Members of the National Contingency Plan as well as representatives of universities, Veterinary Medical Corporations and poultry establishments take part in this exercise.
