Simulation exercise: Avian influenza

Dr Mareks Samohvalovs, Acting Chief Veterinary Officer of the Food and Veterinary Service of Latvia, informed the OIE that an emergency simulation exercise on avian influenza (AI) will take place from 24 to 26 August 2004 in Cesis district.

This simulation will include theoretical and practical training of the personnel from the Food and Veterinary Service of Latvia with the aim to test the recently updated AI contingency plan and to detect possible weak points both in national legislation and in field operations. The disease will be detected during an AI survey programme. All steps of the on farm disease eradication as well as the tracing of animals and animal products will be evaluated.
