Simulation exercise: Classical swine fever in Costa Rica

Dr Yayo Vicente, General Director of Animal Health National Service (SENASA), Ministry of Production, Costa Rica, and Dr Filiberto Frago, Director of Animal Health, Ministry of Livestock Development, Panama have informed the OIE that a bilateral classical swine fever simulation exercise will take place from 30 November to 4 December 2009 at the Souther border of Costa Rica with Panama.

The aim of the exercise, which is being conducted with the participation of the national authorities of the official Veterinary Services of the two countries, Costa Rica and Panama, is to evaluate these authorities’ emergency response in the event of an outbreak of the disease.

Training activities will take place in the auditorium of UNA (National University of Costa Rica), in Coto Brus region (6 km from the border with Panama ), and field activities will take place in farms within the border zone.

This exercise is being conducted with the participation of the Ministries of Agriculture and Livestock, representatives of official animal health bodies of each country, as well as representatives of international organisations (OIRSA, FAO) and UNA.
