Simulation exercise: Foot and mouth disease in Brazil-3

Dr Guilherme Henrique Figueiredo Marques, Director of Animal Health Department, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply of Brazil, informed the OIE that a table-top and field simulation exercise on foot and mouth disease (FMD) will take place in the towns of Florianópolis and São José in the State of Santa Catarina, from 10 to 17 December 2012.

Representatives of the official federal and state departments will participate in this simulation exercise.

The exercise will involve:

  •  table-top activities during which the participants will be trained to the initial attention to be brought to the notification of suspicion of vesicular diseases and
  •  a field activity that will consist in the collection of biological samples to confirm the laboratory diagnosis, in particular, the collection of oesophageal-pharyngeal fluid (OPF).


This procedure is part of the continuous training process of the State technicians for the animal health emergency plan against FMD as well as the compliance with the guidelines stated in the National Programme for the Eradication and Prevention of FMD.
