Simulation exercise: Foot and mouth disease in Brazil-4

Dr Guilherme Henrique Figueiredo Marques, Director of Animal Health Department, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply of Brazil, informed the OIE that a table-top and field simulation exercise on foot and mouth disease (FMD) will take place in the town of Maceió in the State of Alagoas, from 23 to 27 September 2013.

This simulation exercise will focus on the actions to be carried out regarding notifications of vesicular diseases. This is part of the continuous training process of the Official Veterinarians of the State of Alagoas as well as the compliance with the guidelines stated in the National Programme for the Eradication and Prevention of FMD.

The exercise will involve:

• table-top activities during which the participants will be trained to the contingency plan, animal health information system and to the initial attention to be brought to the notification of suspicion of vesicular diseases;
•  field activities that will consist in clinical exams and the collection of biological samples to confirm the laboratory diagnosis;
• a table-top exercise that will consist in a simulated investigation and a registration of a notification of vesicular disease.
