Simulation exercise: Foot and mouth disease in Brazil-5

Dr Guilherme Henrique Figueiredo Marques, Director of Animal Health Department, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply of Brazil, informed the OIE that a table-top and field simulation exercise on foot and mouth disease (FMD) will take place in the town of Caucaia in the State of Ceará, from 6 to 10 October 2014.

This simulation exercise will focus on the actions to be carried out regarding notifications of vesicular diseases. This is part of the continuous training process of the Official Veterinarians of Brazil as well as the compliance with the guidelines stated in the National Programme for the Eradication and Prevention of FMD.

The exercise will involve:

  •  table-top activities during which the participants will be trained to the contingency plan, animal health information system and to the attention to be brought to the notification of suspicion of vesicular diseases;
  •  a table-top exercise that will consist in a simulated investigation and a registration of a notification of vesicular disease;
  •  a field exercise on the attention to be brought to the notification of suspicion of a vesicular disease, including activities such as a clinical exam and collection of biological samples to confirm the laboratory diagnosis.
