Simulation exercise: Foot and mouth disease in Panama-3

22 to 26 October 2018

Dr Rolando Arturo Tello Jaramillo, National Director of Animal Health of the Ministry of Agricultural Development, Panama, informed the OIE that a simulation exercise on an animal health emergency, named Simulation Foot and Mouth Disease, will take place from 22 to 26 October 2018 in the city of La Villa de Los Santos, Province of Los Santos, Panama.

The objective of this exercise is to put in practice the current national emergency plans in the framework of an outbreak of foot and mouth disease and to evaluate the current state of preparedness for that outbreak, identifying problems and improvements when applying the said plans. This exercise is a valuable tool to assess the response capacity of the Veterinary Services, considering the threat posed by the recurrence of outbreaks of foot and mouth disease in the southern region of the continent.

Will participate in this exercise the official Veterinary Services (Animal Health and Agricultural Quarantine) and The Panama – USA Commission for the Eradication and Prevention of screwworm (COPEG), a body that participates directly in the epidemiological surveillance of transboundary diseases. Experts provided by the Pan American Centre for Foot and Mouth Disease (PANAFTOSA) will carry out the technical coordination of the exercise
