Simulation exercise: Foot and mouth disease in the Caribbean Region

22 March 2012

Dr Luis Barcos, OIE Regional Representative for the Americas, informed the OIE that the Inter-American Institute for Agriculture and Livestock (ICA) in collaboration with the United States Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA-APHIS-IS) and the French International Cooperation Centre for Agronomic Research and Development (CIRAD) will carry out in the framework of the “VEP” Project  a simulation exercise on foot and mouth disease (FMD) named “Red Tide” in Castries, St Lucia, on 22 March 2012.

“Red Tide” will be conducted as table-top exercises, conducted simultaneously in all of the participating countries. Countries will be provided with the scenario information and challenge questions from the coordination team throughout the exercise, with the goal of fostering dialogue and decision making at both the national, regional, and international levels. Participants will face the challenge to gather all they have learnt previously during a regional simulation exercise related to an outbreak disease response.

Will participate to this exercise all countries involved in the “VEP” Project: Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Haiti, St Lucia, St. Kitts and Nevis, St Vincent and the Grenadines as well as Puerto Rico and the American Virgin Islands.

 VEP: Veterinary Epidemiologist/Para-epidemiologists
