Simulation exercise: Foot and mouth disease in the United States of America

Dr John Clifford, Deputy Administrator, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of the United States Department of Agriculture, Washington D.C., informed the OIE that a simulation exercise on foot and mouth disease (FMD) is taking place in the United States of America, from 26 to 28 June 2012.

This simulation exercise will begin on day 7 of unintentional FMD multi-state outbreaks in the United States.

The objectives of this exercise are the following:

  •  clarify the roles and responsibilities within APHIS, USDA, and the Federal interagency partners in support of a widespread or National FMD outbreaks,
  •  identify support needed to address gaps in resources that will be required to implement plans and procedures, and
  •  improve individual and team performance.
