Simulation exercise: New world screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) in Panama-2

Dr Bredio Velasco Denvers, National Director of Animal Health of the Ministry of Agricultural Development, Panama, informed the OIE that a simulation exercise on new world screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) will take place from 22 to 25 May 2017 in the village of Pacora, Panama district, Province of Panama.

The objective of this exercise, organized by the Panama – USA Commission for the Eradication and Prevention of screwworm (COPEG) is to :

Strengthen theoretical and practical knowledge of the staff of the COPEG and related institutions on the behaviour of the new world screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax), and the mitigation of outbreaks in free zones, including a special training on fly trapping in the field (Agricultural Research Service – ARS).

The simulation exercise will include theoretical and field activities.

The fieldwork exercise will be carried out in farms located in the villages of Pacora and San Martín in the province of Panama.

It should be pointed out that the Republic of Panama has a Reference Laboratory for this disease.
