Simulation exercise: Rabies in Singapore

9 September

Dr Siang Thai Chew, Director General and Chief Veterinary Officer of the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) of Singapore, informed the OIE that a table-top simulation exercise on rabies will take place on 9 September 2014 in Singapore.

This simulation exercise code-named “Exercise Lyssa I” will test Singapore’s emergency preparedness through the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority’s (AVA) contingency plans in responding to an outbreak of rabies detected in a stray dog.

The objectives of the exercise are as follows:

a) to validate the operational feasibility of policies on the control of rabies,
b) to test command and control in rabies operations,
c) to test supporting plans of the rabies contingency plan.

Dr Siang Thai Chew states that Singapore has been free from rabies since 1953 and that this is only a simulation exercise to maintain vigilance against rabies.
