Dr Mark Schipp, Australian Chief Veterinary Officer, Department of Agriculture and Water Resources, Canberra, Australia, and Dr Christine Middlemiss, UK Chief Veterinary Officer, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, London, United Kingdom, informed the OIE that a simulation exercise, Exercise Waratah, is taking place in Australia and the United Kingdom (UK) simultaneously from 29 January to 31 January 2020.
The UK’s Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries are undertaking a pilot facilitated syndicate exercise to practice undertaking Rapid Risk Assessments (RRA) in response to an outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF).
The three objectives of the exercise are to:
- Explore the theory of using rapid risk assessments to make timely decisions;
- Practice using a rapid risk assessment framework to make decisions in a biosecurity event and;
- Validate the format of the exercise for building capability in using rapid risk assessments.
