Simulation exercise: Rinderpest in Kenya

15 to 19 June 2010

Dr Peter Maina Ithondeka, Director of Veterinary Services, Ministry of Livestock development of Kenya informed the OIE that the AU/IBAR(*) in conjunction with the Chief Veterinary Officers (CVOs) of Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia is organising a cross border rinderpest field simulation exercise as an hypothetical disease outbreak. This exercise is taking place in Moyale (Kenya/Ethiopia border) from 15 to 19 June 2010.

This simulation exercise will help Somali-ecosystem (SES) countries, namely Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia to put in place well coordinated preparedness for response during any future rinderpest outbreaks in the region. It will enable the regional states Contingency plans, and Rapid Response protocols to ascertain their capability during disease outbreak intervention activities.
