Announcement of 2018 OIE Photo Competition Winners

Today, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) has unveiled the long awaited results of its Photo competition since the closure of the competition on 15 April 2018. The OIE announced ten winners on its dedicated website: www.oiephotocompetition.com. Launched in February and titled “Animal health and welfare beyond the cliché”, the competition was an opportunity for entrants to artistically and creatively highlight the work done worldwide by animal health players in the implementation of OIE International Standards.

Paris, 16 May 2018 – This fourth edition of the competition was open to the OIE Global Network and veterinary students from all over the world. Its main theme was sub-divided into six possible themes for the photos, i.e. animal disease surveillance, disease prevention and control; animal welfare; animal production systems; aquatic animal health and production systems; One Health; and veterinary education.

There are numerous clichés about animal health and welfare as well as the veterinary profession in the collective unconscious, and photos depicting the topic often do not capture the reality of the related activities on the ground.  The aim of the competition was therefore to visually and creatively show the crucial importance of the work done to protect animal health and welfare worldwide through the implementation of OIE International Standards.

In an effort to continue with the modernisation of the competition, the OIE used the dedicated website created in 2017 which gathered all the necessary information about the competition in one virtual space. This was extremely beneficial in consolidating the identity and brand of the competition.

The jury, composed of Dr Botlhe Michael Modisane, President of the OIE, Dr Frédéric Decante, veterinary practitioner and press photographer and Dr Monique Eloit, OIE Director General, evaluated the photographs under strict anonymous conditions. The jury selected the photos which best demonstrated, in an aesthetically appealing and artistically captivating manner, the work carried out by animal health and welfare players in the implementation of OIE International Standards.

The prizes will be awarded at the Opening Ceremony of the upcoming 86th General Session of the World Assembly of OIE Delegates in Paris, on Sunday 20 May, 2018.

The OIE congratulates the awardees and deeply thanks the numerous participants!
