Epidemiological comments Inspection of the apiary was performed for teaching purposes and there small hive beetles were found in the brood chamber, this lead to the suspected presence of infestation with Aethina tumida (Small hive beetle). This suspicion was notified to the Official Veterinary Service who decided to carry out the official inspection of the apiary by taking the quantity of one sample of 68 adults and two larvae. Samples were handed out to the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory who confirmed positive results to Aethina tumida. Note by the OIE Animal Health Information Department: Since this is the first time that infestation with Aethina tumida (Small hive beetle) is identified in the history of the country, the reason for notification as first occurrence applies to the country but the event is in fact circumscribed to a zone.
