Epidemiological comments The intravenous pathogenicity index (IVPI) test carried upon the five production units suspected of infection (four of commercial layers and a layers farm), within the municipality of Encarnación de Díaz, Jalisco, gave following results: 2.76 for three of them, and 2.84 for two of them. A farm of commercial breeding poultry, which had already been depopulated, showed an IVPI of 3, within the municipality of Jocotepec. Two other positive farms were identified in Zapopan and another one in Acatic. Active surveillance measures in the perifocal area within the state of Puebla identified four infected farms and three infected backyards. Poultry from the Tepanco de López farm did not present any clinical signs but registered an IVPI of 2.87, which led to a whole slaughtering of the animals. Backyard poultry in San Martín Temexlucan registered an IVPI of 3 and were all slaughtered. In Tlahuapan, Puebla, a farm was notified with high mortality. In Tehuacán, Puebla, two positive farms were detected, among which one with captive-reared wild birds. Two infected backyards were identified in San Antonio Cañada and Tepanco de López. In each case, a so-called “definitive quarantine” has been implemented and animal slaughtering is on-going.In the municipality of Acultzingo, Veracruz, the disease virus was isolated within two farms of heavy breeding poultry belonging to the same business, thanks to passive surveillance measures implemented after a rise in mortality rate and the occurrence of clinical signs suggesting the presence of the virus. Moreover, in the same municipality, the virus was isolated in a farm of 28,900 heavy breeding poultry, thanks to passive surveillance measures. The farm buildings were depopulated and appropriate animal health measures were implemented. Epidemiological investigation is on-going in those three states and epidemiological sampling is on-going in the perifocal area.
