Epidemiology
Source of the outbreak(s) or origin of infection
  • Unknown or inconclusive
Epidemiological comments B. mallei affected equine farm: The affected equine farm brought under veterinary authority control, quarantine and movement restrictions enforced by the law. Upon our request, the OIE Regional Representative for the Middle East visited Kuwait and evaluated the ongoing surveillance program. He suggested to send the samples from the contact horses of B. mallei affected farm to the OIE Reference Laboratory for glanders in Germany (Friedrich-Loeffler Institute, Jena). Blood samples were then collected in the B. mallei affected farm and tested in the above-mentioned laboratory; all samples turned negative by complement fixation test (CFT). As per the ongoing passive and active surveillance, from 17 December 2019 to 30 April 2020, about 1,754 horses tested in the national laboratory turned negative by CFT. So far, from 15 July 2019 (since outbreak) to 30 April 2020, about 7,914 horses were tested by CFT turned negative by CFT.
