Epidemiological comments A third outbreak (BC-2018-003) is reported on the Mainland (Delta) with the sudden death of all feral rabbits from a small colony. Deaths occurred a day prior to the index case (BC-2018-001); the rabbits had been frozen prior to being submitted to the laboratory for testing. This suggests the virus was present on Vancouver Island and on the Mainland at the same time. RHDV2 was isolated from 3 rabbits from outbreak BC-2018-003 and whole genome sequencing indicates there is a 99-100% homology with the Nanaimo BC RHDV2 isolate (BC-2018-001). A fourth outbreak (BC-2018-004) is also reported in Comox on Vancouver Island. CFIA has issued an import permit to the province to allow import of an inactivated RHDV2 vaccine to be used as a preventative measure.
